Reader on Board!
This is a project carried out by Sibiu International Airport in partnership with the ASTRA Sibiu County Library — a unique initiative, the first of its kind in Romania, that brings reading to and encourages it in an unconventional setting, such as an airport. The project aims to create a new library service by supporting public library services and reading in unconventional spaces.
Sibiu International Airport is constantly focused on improving the passenger experience at the airport. Thus, one of the main reasons Sibiu Airport joined this innovative project is to improve and diversify the services offered by the airport by creating a space that offers a new perspective on passengers’ waiting time, providing a pleasant alternative for spending time in the Sibiu Airport terminal.
The 1,500 library items comprising the collection in Romanian, English, German, Hungarian, French, Spanish, and Italian are available to passengers at Sibiu International Airport in the Departures area (domestic and international flights) within the passenger terminal, free of charge, with the aim of encouraging reading in unconventional spaces and helping passengers spend their waiting time in a pleasant and productive way. The selected titles cover various fields, primarily fiction, management, local history and traditions, personal development, and children’s books.
Whether you read it or borrow it for the entire trip, we recommend returning the book whenever possible on your next trip to the “Reader on Board!” shelf at Sibiu International Airport or directly to the main branch of the ASTRA Sibiu County Library. And when circumstances prevent the book from being returned to the collection, it automatically becomes an “ambassador” for Sibiu’s public library and for Sibiu itself, in a home, on a shelf in a library on another meridian, at another airport, or in another book collection wherever it is needed, thus connecting Sibiu with readers beyond the country’s borders. All volumes are marked with the campaign’s logo Reader on Board!
The project's Reader on Board! ambitious concept, carried out under the motto "Read and Discover the World!", demonstrates that things work out when we seek to open up not only physical horizons, but also journeys into an extraordinary world that we can access through reading.
We invite you to visit the Reader on Board Facebook page to learn more about these “traveling” books and to share your experience of reading “at altitude”!
